Thread: Anyone bought a Kindle?

Personally don't have one but a mate of mine who reads heaps swears by it. Pros I have observed are that it is very easy on the eyes in terms of reading (basically looks like a normal book page) and has no glare (unlike using an ipad for a similar use). In terms of using it on the internet however does have issues with resizing pages so the entire page can be seen, but frankly they aren't designed to be a web browser. From my understanding books are well priced. In conclusion it does what it is designed to do very well and not much else.

Hey mate....I got my missus one........well she got it with my coin . She loves it. Had a look the other night and it seems pretty good...even my 7 yr old uses it as can download thousands of books onto it. She can read her books and he can read his and it auto saves at the last spot you were up to. Is anti glare as well so can easily read in most conditions. I was able to look up some things of interest of mine.....and you get a sample where you can read the first 10 pages...and if likey can pay for it and down it loads. Can also download onto puter and it can be zapped over to the Kindle. HTH,

No, but a friend researched readers quite a bit and went with the Sony Reader. It has the advantage that you can load any PDF or ebook onto a SD card, wack it in an read it. And it's not backlit so uses less power and works better the brighter the ambient light is.

I think the only downside of the Sony Reader is that you cant use it whilst its charging, but that will probably change.

Yeah I've got one, the screen text is the same (or very very similar) as reading a normal book in any light. I think that a cover is necessary, because it's so thin and light I had trouble holding it so the added bulk of the cover makes it feel much better.

I think the whole Kindle v's Sony v's Nook is the same as the holden / ford crowd. Just pick one you like.

The reason why I went with the kindle was because amazon has got the biggest selection in books. Plus they are cheap, amazon don't make much money on these, they want you to buy the books...

The only downside is that because it's in the US every transaction is in USD and then depending on your bank you get stung for a conversion fee to AUD.

The easy way around it is to buy a voucher of say $100 USD, then put that on your amazon account. This way your only paying the conversion fee every time you buy the voucher and not every book...

That's a good comparison chart, the only thing I will say is that the data on the kindle isn't entirely correct. Amazon pays for the shipping and import tax, plus it also supports pdf's.

Thanks all for the responses. Just received an email from Borders promoting the Kodo for $179 & the ability to import all sorts of books looks good. Part of me still wants to go with the Kindle (Sony's double the price) as I have a history of always buying the cheap arse imitation, second rate stuff and always end up disappointed.

Now where is my iPud? Oh thats right I gave it my kids cause it was too annoying to use.

Is the 3g any use in the Kindle? Paying a conversion fee on the credit card each time kind of defeats the purpose of buying cheap ebooks. Do you set up an account with Amazon & they just debit your card each purchase?

I've got the wifi model so I can't comment if the 3g is any use. But by all accounts it works worldwide, the books are fairly small in filesize so your not waiting around forever for them to download and Amazon covers all costs in regards to the 3g connection and data transfer.

You setup an Amazon account with your credit card details, then every purchase comes off your CC. Very similar model to iTunes. But like I said if you put $100 gift voucher on your amazon account, the conversion fee is once per voucher and $100 will go a long way when most books are $6.

Yeah saw that advert for the Kodo as well, looks like an interesting device. I haven't seen any reviews yet, the ebook market is starting to pickup now which is good news for us. Sony needs to look at what Amazon are doing and not look at making money on the device, but using it as a platform to encourage book sales.
