    iPad question

Want to buy my wife am iPad for Xmas. To use for coffee table laptop ( you know for bank, Facebook and the other crap) and she does alot of photo work so she can take it with her and see the pics pretty instantly. After all she just needs a screen for this rather than a full laptop

Am I wasting my time or are they any good for this. Looking at a 32g 3G one. She already has an iPhone so likes that

I was also told that they are bring out a new iPad in Jan is this true or what

    Cheers

You can get an adapter set (camera connection) which takes an sd card and allows a usb connection to the camera to get the photos off the camera.

You can get apps that can manipulate the photos.

Displaying photos is easy, just flip across the screen to display the next one. iPad is an ideal gadget to do this. Much easier than carrying a laptop around.

Currently I am looking at getting a non 3g iPad and tethering it to my iPhone using an app called itether.

You can use the iPhone as a wireless (wifi) hub but it drains the battery real fast.

Apple don't normally say when new things are due for release.

It would be real nice if the next iPad allowed bluetooth connection, and hence tethering, to the iPhone.
But due to a sweet deal made with AT&T it is unlikely to happen. AT&T don't want people to tether to a phone, they want you to buy another 3g data package.

New iPad is definitely being rumoured for release in the next month or two.

Personally I don't believe the iPad offers enough for quickly viewing photos and it really is better as email, internet, eBooks, video, iTunes, Facebook, etc.

32GB is limited and unless you are taking small JPEG images you won't have lots of storage with the music and everything else loaded. Also, at present, there is no ability to remotely store pictures unless you sync to a PC/Mac.

IMO a 13" MacBook or MacBookPro or a 13" or 11" MacBookAir would be better.

I think the iPad in its current form is the tip of the iceberg as to tablet PC's. Give it a couple more updates and I think the iPad and the others that are emerging will be changing portable computing.

As far as I am aware...
    No and No

It is not a "true" usb port.

Actually the camera connection kit for the IPad has the ability to read SD cards directly or connect directly to the camera via the camera's mini USB. Check the web site for a list of compatible cameras.

The iPad changed my view of tablet computing, having had tablet PC's in the past and been less than impressed with them. It is so easy to use and there are a great selection of apps available, both free and paid.

The Ipad is not a replacement for a PC or laptop but is very convenient and makes a great photo viewer. The speakers aren't too bad either.

I initially bought a 32GB Wi-Fi iPad as a coffee-table device for browsing the web... then I found some productivity apps and started using it for work. After some failed attempts at tethering it to my Blackberry, I bought a 64GB 3G model with a prepaid Vodafone SIM, and gave the 32G to my wife to play with. She discovered the Amazon Kindle app and now saves a small fortune by buying ebooks instead of paper ones. She was very skeptical at first, but soon became a convert.

win-win... we love our iPads, and I'm no Apple fan-boy. We both have Blackberry's rather than iPhones, but the iPad is a real winner.

I got the camera connection kit but haven't tried it yet. The VGA connector is very handy for sharing presentations using KeyNote, which I use a lot for my day-job.

A supported serial connection interface for LR/RR P38 diagnostics would be great, as would a built-in webcam for video-conferencing.

For me, the other 2 must-haves for the iPad are:

    • Targus conductive stylus
    • faux leather case with built-in bluetooth keyboard from MWave

No matter when you buy stuff of this nature, you will get overtaken by the next wave of technology in a few months time... that's how it goes.

    Cheers, Paul.
