High End Graphics Cards - a waste of money?

I was cleaning out my garage today and came across a box with a PC my late son had started to build up. It has a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard, a 2.4GHz Intel Dual Core processor, and a Gigabyte NVidia GeForce 8800GTS Albatron graphics card.

OK, I'm right with the motherboard and processor - they'll be an upgrade on the Gigabyte GA-965GM-S2 motherboard and 1.8GHz Dual Core processor in my current PC (was also my late son's). However, this present desktop has a Gigabyte NVidia 8600 GT graphics card.

Is there any advantage in me using the 8800 GTS over the 8600 GTS for non-gaming applications? I have no games on my PC. The 8800 GTS is a monster and cost him about $360 according the box it came in. Should I just sell the card? It may not be worth anything now that it's 3 years old even though it's never been used.

Equally, what do I do with his specialised gaming keyboards and even the brand new steerung wheel/foot pedals designed for gaming - plus about five 20 inch LCD screens? I did think of making up a flight simulator using a real light aircraft cockpit but my wife said NO!

no point if not gaming Ron,,
it would need a serious PSU too, upwards of 650w's
the 8600 is just a socket filler,,,

You can build a nice dedicated MS flight simulator PC with it
I have a Nvidia card on my dedicated PS pc using Win XP. Remember that if you are using XP the graphic card is using part of the ram memory of your PC so it is good to have good ram capacity on it.
    Cheers

Yep, the PC Lee was building has that.

I didn't know if a high end card would help with photo editing or display.

yes, most definitely if video/pic editing.

The gaming industry is the reason behind all the advances in video editing, just like the porn industry has always been at the technical forefront of filming.

Given most photo edit/rendering is done in 2d and on the CPU (At least it was last time I Checked) the gains from the 8800 over the 8600 would be minimal the main reason why you'd want a high end card is for better colour calibration or insanely high rez monitors

that said I would be looking at other features such as dual monitor support TV out/in before ditching it you certainly won't get a heap of cash for it.

The power usage on an 8800GTS won't be hugely different from the 8600 it the GTX models you have to watch out for.

You could also aways look at something entirely different for it like
Folding@home - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That will run on the GPU with the right set of drivers

I suppose I could try a desk based Flight Sim - I have enough 20" LCD screens , I have the Logitech Momo force fed steering wheel and pedals (this one), the video card supports dual monitors......

I also have a 5.1 sound system in Lee's boxes of stuff that could be fitted to the PC. I presently only have a headset for use with Skype. There were four sets of them but I put two (still unused in their original boxes) out on the street last weekend for whoever wanted to pick them up, and gave one to my daughter.

I think I have a box of his racing games and other games in the garage. They'll probably just go into the rubbish bin.

Pictures and videos always look better with more pixels.
If you have a bigger better card then use it.
Second hand cards dont get much return..so dont sell it just use it.

    Ubuntu!

A while back I sent away for free copies of Ubuntu (vers 5.04). I had no idea what for, but hey,, it was free!
So here I am setting up a wireless dedicated "backup/printer" PC,(does that make sense?) and this copy of Ubuntu was hiding behind my XP disc,,

    will it work?

only one way to find out----

I'd want a better graphics card even if I wasn't playing games...most people don't realize but a better graphics card usually makes the whole computer run a little smoother because most things you do (internet browsing etc.) use graphics processing in some form...better graphics card means smoother graphics which means smoother all round computer processing.

I'd chuck it in your computer and use it!
