I've had an iPad for about 8 months and it is my most used appliance. I use it for web browsing, forums, email, youtube, movies, gps and news. Its handy because it turns straight on with no boot up and the battery lasts 10 hours. I use it in much the same way you would use a book except it has built in lighting for my failing eyes. On trips it is a lot easier than a laptop to lug around. I only use my laptop for work related things now because the ipad is much more convenient to use, as simple as opening a book. It has a lot of shortcomings but is pretty good for those tasks I have listed above. Its main shortcoming is that Apple makes it. Itunes is rubbish.

There is no point, Steve Jobs simply says buy one and people do, it's quite a nice business model.

Dont be to quick to judge I was a apple hater for many years until recently. After starting a new job my Boss gave me a tour of his Ipad and I was sold.

Let me start by saying firstly the are NOT a replacement for a laptop. I use mine in a variety of ways. Its unbeatable for Navigation, we use it in the car for incar entertainment system on long drives, plugs into the car stereo. I watch movies with it, watched latest top gear show while waiting for the mrs at train station (her train was delayed for 15 mins) She uses it for talking books an also net browsing while watching teli. I have an app that shows me all fishing knots which I use when I am in the boat. Speaking of using the boat, I overlay google maps in MotionX and then navigate up the river arms to avoid the trees and find the deep holes. Using the tracks function I can see the areas I have trolled. I have another app which lets me remote control my Home theatre computer in the lounge room. I have all my email accounts on it and can open all Office docs plus pdf etc. There's also another app I use which lets me connect to my NAS server, when mum and dad came over I connected to the NAS and they flicked through all the pics from our latest trip to Vietnam, streaming directly from the server, I also stream all my movies/music/docs from the NAS box. I also plug it directly into my Electronic Drum Kit and stream music straight to the kit so I can play along to. I have a 24 track mixing/recording app on the ipad which I use to mix down songs I've played to.

They make no noise at all, so you can listen to a talking book in bed, the battery life is fantastic, I plug it into the car to recharge when I am camping or traveling.

Now I know you can do all this with an Iphone, but for me who's eyesight is crap and has fatboy fingers the iphone gives me grief. I cant use it for Navigation as the screens to small I'm not eager to watch a movie on it. For me its the convenience and the screen size that I really like about the Ipad. Its not as cumbersome as a laptop and for anyone that is wanting to get a solution for an incar GPS/navigation, these things are perfect.

This will be an interesting topic me thinks

I too an a recent Ipad user, the wife got me one for xmas. My first apple

But like others have mentioned its a fantastic piece of kit and I am only using the minimal of its functions but agree Itunes is shocking

I use mine for travelling and convienance doing so, its light and performs well for its size and it just works not like my windows PC with the not responding and the greyed out screen when I click on another application

    Anyway I like mine

iTunes is one of the easiest pieces of software to use.

Far better than most MS offerings.

Probably right but thats not saying much.
I find it frustrating to sometimes not be able to do the simplest of things. Also I dislike having a ring put through my nose and walked along like a total numpty even if I am.

I do like the app store though. To be able to conveniently buy pretty good apps for peanuts and not have to endure ms installation dramas is gold.

If I bought an ipad, then how do we, or should I say do you have any tips on mounting it in a Defender. I know there are suction caps for the wind screen but will they hold up in our corrugated roads?

    Ipad suction cup mounts

Will they be cumbersome in the front of the defer?

How about the GPS chip in them, does it need to be upgraded for our isolated parts of the country?

    Cheers Awest

I'm looking at purchasing a wall mounting bracket for mounting in the boat. As for Suction caps I'd give em a miss. Maybe this might work
