    Wakey Wakey!

My wireless printer/storage PC needs to sleep. Actually the real problem is how to wake it up! The Foxconn motherboard(661fx7mi) has these options--

    vMACPME Power Up Control
This option is used to enable or disable the system to be waken up by onboard
    LAN.
    vPCIPME Power Up Control
This option is used to enable or disable the system to be waken up by PCI cards.

I have a 4port usb card in one of the PCI slots.

So, how best to power down the PC but only to such a state that a wireless print demand will work?

    XP Pro.

    If I get you right....

You want the PC to sleep, the printer is connected and turned on, and you want the PC to wake up when you send a print to it over the wireless network, presumabley from a lappy or wifi enabled smartphone etc?

In this case it is the network card which needs to issue the wake up command.

Go to the properties of your wireless network card and see if there is a Wake up signal which can be enabled.

You will also have to go to the PC's BIOS settings and enable the "Wake up on LAN" setting which should be there.

I don't think there is any other Windows based software setting which needs to be chnaged, other than setting the PC to sleep (Not hibernate) after a preset ammount of time.

    Cheers

    Matt

On my 5yr old ASUS laptop... Sleep means that the CPU is running at v low power, HDD is stopped, data is held in RAM and display is switched off. Press the start button or right click the mouse and it comes awake in a couple of seconds and you can continue where you left off. a.k.a "cat nap"

Hibernate is "deep sleep" ...stuff in RAM is written to the HDD which then shuts down along with the CPU and the display. Need to press start button...HDD and CPU fire up along with the display,,,takes a bit longer to write data back into RAM and then you continue.

In both cases the machine "resumes" rather than boots up from scratch...

other PCs prob. variations on same theme...

    hope this helps

Spot on! In fact all Windows PC's behave in this way.

Sleep consumes a tiney amount a power to keep the data in RAM
Hibernate consumes no power as all the data is on the HDD

Hmm I was wondering coz my laptop has the various options so I guess hibernate would be better when running from battery.
    Thanks

Is the wireless lan on the motherboard or a card, or a usb?

    Actually I've got no idea.
