iPhone 4 plan – Telstra or Optus ?

OK I’d like to get an iPhone4 16 Gb

I am looking to spend around $50 per month (maybe $55 or so including handset repayments.

I wouldn’t need any more than 1Gb of data per month.

Of course if I can spend less that’s cool too.

I have heard bad stories about Telstra (from Telstra people as well!), but also some bad tales of Optus tech support (or lack of).

Interested in any ON TOPIC input on this matter please.
Pros /Cons of the various networks and plans.
    Personal experience very much appreciated.

I am NOT interested in hearing about Android phones, other networks etc etc.

    Thank You

Went with the Telstra $45 or $49 plan on a 16Gb phone, 500Mb download, last September. Optus doesn't get service at our house, Telstra does.

To justify the spend - I was spending less than $20 a month prepay on old phone - I now make all calls from the iphone including at least one ~60min call a month. Data download is enough, but I'm mostly near wifi. I haven't yet received a bill for more than plan costs.

Never been able to replicate the death grip dropout.

Oh one other thing. One the Tesltra sight it says
All iPhone units supplied by Telstra are configured to work only with the wireless services provided by Telstra.
    So WTF does thate mean?
I presume it means just Telstra 3G servies (ie doesnt use Optus 3G and so on).
It shoudl connect wi-fi to any wi-fi netwrodk withotu drama yes?
eg free public wifi, coffee shop wi fi, home wi-fi optus etc etc

go telstra if you want the best reception in the most places.

you can unlock telstra and optus phones but it costs money to do so.

    normal wifi works fine

make sure you get insurance for the phone if going on a 2 year contract.

Telstra just seem tight to me. - retrieval costs for messagebank etc. Bloody tightbums. At the moment virgin charge me nothing for that ! I tend to get a lot too, becuae I often have to have my phone off.

Tell me about insurance please. It's something I thought of earlier today and wondered about.
I presume you just mean add it as a seperate item to house contents insurance as a portable item?
or is there sme sort of special insurance available?

ring em and ask them, the insurance costs about 20 bucks a year.

get a capped plan with the data limit you need.

optus, virgin and all the other alsorans dont have the coverage, simple fact if you travel outside of the major centres.. and from memory the telsra data speed is way quicker as well.

i am a telstra dealer, but dont sell iphones as the onsell terms are onerous.

Was a simple decision for me - Telstra.

Having had experience with both companies (Telstra and Optus) over the past few years, their customer service is as bad as each others, generally speaking.

For me, the main factor was network coverage. Telstra is leaps and bounds ahead of anyone else for coverage, both phone coverage and data. Sure Telstra don't have coverage everywhere, but they have a ****load more than any other phone provider.

My iPhone is on Telstra (Optus doesn't work where I live in Western Sydney).

My wife's iPhone is on 3. My coverage is far superior to hers.

I don't use MessageBank so I'm not concerned about what T charges.

Do all iPhones receive 850MHz? If so, you'll be able to use any carrier's iPhone on Telstra after unlocking.

How do you not use messagebank. What happens when people ring and you don't answer ?

There is no cost to unlock iPhone.
Going to UK later and will get a Vodaphone sim. Just unlocked phone and it is really simple to do. For once, Telstra really helpful in giving instructions on what to do.

I got the $63 plan which has 3GB and $200(?) of calls.
Use phone to tether laptop. Telstra do not charge extra for tethering.

    Very pleased.
