You need top buy the Mac versions:
Microsoft Office for Mac | Office For Mac

Or run it in a virtual environment/windows emulator. Far cleaner and easier to buy the mac version.

    OpenOffice

you can download openoffice for Mac for free and it does everything that Office does but l think it does it better and you can save your files in office format to transfer to her work pc when required

I'd go for Open Office or Google Apps (if you have a live broadband connection). Best thing about both solutions is that you pay micro$oft NOTHING!

And grab a copy of iWork...

It has some brilliant apps.. And can export to Excel.

Google apps and calender is fantastic. At uni everything is coordinated through this.My timetable is automaticvally added to calender and emails me a schedule every morning (as well as waking the computer and setting the morning alarm to wake me up). Then texts me (free service) 5 min (or other pre set time) before my next lecture/class. All my work is available on their cloud, the uni has wireless broadband so I can do everything I need as well as accessing the hard drives at home (and backdooring torrents past the unis closed ports).

So far all the docs I've created have been compatible with both mac and win office. We have 2 mac & 1 win desktops, 2 mac and 5 win laptops (3 xboxex and 1 ps3) and so far everything is smooth. I testes using the google cloud to store some video files and watched streamed and apart from stopping other stuff from downloading at the same time was as smooth as it is from local drives.
