    Find my iPhone

    Hi all,

Just got an iPhone 4. A pop-up occurred when I installed the software on my PC, advertising 'Find my iPhone', or something like that. The concept sounds great.

    Any ideas...any experiences..any good..should I download it?

    Thanks,

    Kev.

Yes, you should. It enables you to find your phone when it slips down the back of the couch if you have access to a PC or Mac. Either can send it an audible alert by logging on to mobile me. It will also display a map to show where your phone is if it's simply lost in your house or stolen. It's free too.

Are you likely to lose it? It's pretty harmless, unless you let someone else know the password, then they can find out where you are at any given time...

Also, it isn't mega accurate, gives the rough location, within a couple of hundred metres....

    BUT it uses data.
I turned mine off after I had a 80% warning from Telstra when I had looked at one website.

It's fantastic, just keep it on just incase because you can remotely lock, wipe, set a password and track your phone.

    Some incorrect information here.

    1) You simply install the app on the iphone - it doesn't need to then be running on the phone to locate it with an external computer. You simply type in google (from any other computer - Mac or PC) - find my iphone, then log into the mobile me account using your Apple ID and passwork, and you have the options to play a sound - helps you find the thing if it's down the back of the couch etc,; play alert - displays message on screen; lock off iphone; or get a map up which shows where the phone is located.

    2) It doesn't use any data other than when locating it, and that amount is minimal.

Again - the app doesn't need to be running on the iphone ever. Just install it - then use an external PC to do any of the above things via the computer to your phone. It won't use any data period unless you actually try to locate it. Again - if you do, the amount of data used is infinitesimal and won't "eat up" your data plan.

There is no good reason to not use this app!

Add to this, by going into the Push notifications menu you can turn off email and app push (excluding FMI) and you WONT be burning data

I am pretty sure you have to have the GPS enabled , which uses quite a bit of data.
Otherwise how does the system doesn't know where it is.(assuming its not behind your couch but up the road a bit). And location by cell would be useless.

    Again....

Location services ONLY accesses data IF authorised to do so in the settings...

So for all other applications TURN OFF location services...

    No more data issue...

And:- The data for the A-GPS is actually quite low as its only usually used for the initial fix - and this is to download the Almanac more than anything. Only other times is if using 'streaming' mapping programs and not locally cached data.

I use my iPhone 4 - with push - and ALL software running Push notifications, all location services, PUSH email, eBay notifications etc...
Mapping and GPS all the time.... I download application updates via the 3G network quite often and use it for forums access on an addictive basis.

I have yet to ever exceed 500Mb allowance I previously had, and now have a 1Gb allowance and never get close...

Perhaps some people should look at either actually checking their settings are correct or purchasing a data pack
