The issue is not with pics, it is with links to external data. For example, I was looking at a thread about leaf springs (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-ch...-vehicles.html), and there is a link to an external page talking about PTFE pads (actually UHMW tape) between the leaves. The link is labelled as "here", but when hovered over it shows EITHER the actual link (something on expeditionlandrovers, from memory) or a long viglink string. In IE9 it seems to try to use the entire viglink string which just errors...... When the page is first loaded, hovering over the link shows it correctly as www.expedit...etc., but if I click on "open in new tab", it opens the viglink string which errors, and subsequently the link shows the full viglink string when hovered over.

Another issue, as I was also surprised at the speed of the forum, a quick and rough check indicates that loading a forum page transfers about 300-500K of data. That explains why it takes so long to load over a satellite link! Most forum pages use more like 50K to load a page! It looks like the various graphics, ads, commercial add-ons (doubleclick etc., and boy are there a lot on this site!) that are present on the site have caused a fair degree of "bloat". Whilst this may not impact an ADSL2 user, I would imagine that it increases the loading on the server and it certainly does impact those of us stuck with high latency satellite connections!

I realise that I am a new user, so it's not really my place to complain, but in addition to being a Land Rover owner and farmer, I'm also a retired IT consultant and happy to offer any assistance that I can, if it is needed or wanted!

I tried that specific link from that thread both here in Chrome & in IE9 & all is ok there too for me.
Not sure what to suggest other than if you really want to use IE9 go to tools/internet options/advanced tab & then click on "Reset" to reset all IE settings ... This has been known to solve a few strange IE problems before.

As for the speed & page load thing, I agree there is often a fair bit loaded for each page compared to some forums. Not much we can do there.

Incisor, you host this on your very own server/s don't you?

    Regards,

    Les.

As of right now the link is also working for me, but when I made the post above, and over the last couple of days since I discovered the forum, it didn't..... I have made no changes to any configuration setting, by the way!

    Hmmmm.......

Yep hosted on my own servers in a rck in pipe networks rackspace creek street brisbane, sitting right beside an array of servers belonging to most of the large independant isps

It is probably the unfortunate consequence of hosting large numbers of ads and other commercial content, which I'm guessing are required to fund the site.

It's not the worst I've seen though, one site (an Australian optics dealer) loaded 3mb+ on it's home page. On investigation it was a revolving slideshow of about 5 photos, all of which were more or less "straight off the camera" and had not been correctly resized!! That site was simply not useable from a satellite connection, but the owner had no idea because it "worked fine for him"....... he was sitting next to the server on a gigabit link!

    Edit:

    Thought so!

for non subscribers, an absolute worst case scenario should see 7 adverts on one page at least 2 of which should be text based.

subscribers only see three from memory, i have ads turned on so i can see what is going on...

many sites have upwards of 10 or 15 as a maximum

i use the minimum i can get away with for the $ return i require to maintain and upgrade the place.

and then sometimes i cant upgrade at the required rate, but....

It's not the ads per se that cause the problem, it's the amount of data transmitted and the number of transactions required. A satellite internet connection (no matter what "they" tell us) downloads at a few hundred kilobits/second, and has a latency of 1.5seconds+. So to load a page that transfers 500Kbytes, and does so in a large number of transactions from perhaps five or more different web sites (all the google/doubleclick servers, the ad servers themselves and then the various tracking sites) results in very poor performance and slow page load times. Also at 500Kb per page it burns through the tiny data allowance that we satellite users are sold......

Having said all that, I still prefer living in an area where satellite is my only option, so I guess it's a price I have to pay..

However, if "subscribers" are exempt from all the ad and tracking, I'd be interested to hear about that option. This web site seems like a very good resource, and being able to use it without burning my data allowance or having to wait 45 seconds for a page to load (I've just timed it!) has to be worth something!

i know how satellite latency works, i was an ISP for years and got my backup bandwidth via satellite before the yanks grabbed it all for some invasion in the middle east

do your self a favour and set up a small proxy box at home, linux box with squid will do the job....

    it will help you heaps

i need the tracking to attract advertisers, and i need the advertisers to pay the bills.

Links don't work for me either if they're external. Like in people's profiles or signatures that link to an external site. I've been having this issue for a little while. I removed our external links because they didn't work
