    Computer Stopped Talking To GPS

    Background
I bought a new generic GPS a couple of weeks back - has a Win CE Vr 6, 128mb Ram and 4gb Flash Drive and can a 16gb SD card.

I was able to plug it straight into my laptop (no active sync etc required) to modify it to work like a Ranga special. When connected to my XP system the GPS flash drive came up as d drive and the sd card as e drive.

I was able to rewrite ini files etc from the lap top and due to the size of the Flash drive I was able to place all the GPS files/music etc. Using Windows Explorer in WIN CE I am able to open all files but Win CE does not support opening and rewriting Ini files where the XP laptop does.

No problems - I rewrote everything and the GPS works well - but it does need a little tweaking and I need to move some files to make it work a little better and then amend some INI files to point to where the files are.

    The Problem.
I connected the GPS to my computer today and it did not recognise the two drives in the GPS so I cannot get access to the INI files. I can move files where I want using the GPS but not open the Inis.

So any suggestions why all of a sudden my XP computer fails to recognise the GPS when it is connected when before there were no issues.

    Thanks

    Garry

Do you have anything else plugged in this time that might be using the D and E drive? Something like a card reader or USB hub?

Plug it in again and the try Right clicking on My Computer, Manage, Disk Management and see what is there - you might be able to remap to another drive letter

My GPS with the miopocket unlock (rather than Ranga's unlock) behaves some what similar on Win 7. Sometimes you can see the flash drive and the SD card, sometimes you can't. Never been able to work out exactly why that is thought it does seem related to exactly when you connect to the PC, ie having the GPS on then connecting vs connecting while the GPS is off then turning the GPS on.

When you read the miopocket documentation it mentions there are problems with connecting some GPSs via USB to PCs. In fact with the tools miopocket supplies there is one which reconfigures the GPS's USB connection in one of three different ways to overcome this specific problem but none of them work reliably for me.

Ferret's comment has stirred a very vague recollection about the importance of the order in which you connect and turn on.

It might have been related to my GPS or my card reader or it might have involved ActiveSync (or it might have been something quite unrelated).

Anyway, it wouldn't take long to check the various options.
