Android is now the most targeted platform for malware....

McAfee: Android malware problem getting worse, now most targeted platform - SlashGear

It's not a problem inherent in smart devices, just with stupid companies. Google made a risk an inherent part of Android when it chose to allow an open marketplace for apps.

Lookout reported that the Trojan known as DroidDream used two exploits called “exploid” and “rageagainstthecage” to infect Android-based devices.

Lookout said it found that hackers had used exploid to deploy itself looking like a legitimate “calling plan management” app and began hitting the market via what it said were Chinese app markets.

Eventually, Lookout said, a version of that app turned up in the official (and more mainstream) Android Market. A further review found this app turned out to be, essentially, a dud because it didn’t have the code to fully exploit a device.

But just the fact an app like this made it into the Android Market was frightening enough, Lookout said, because that indicates it could happen again. And with real, device-smashing code.
What fun. So in addition to deciding what apps you want to purchase you also have to wonder which ones could be potentially are carrying a payload. In other words Google have decided to place responsibility for risk assessment and management in the hands of Android users, and by definition risk is a part of the Android "experience".

Android Market free-for-all blamed for malware avalanche ? The Register

Android ticks all of these boxes, just as Windows did before it. Unless the lessons of the past are learned, and learned quickly, we risk repeating the same pox-plagued history of Windows desktops on smartphones.
