    Trojan

My old laptop is falling to pieces--the hinge is broken and epoxy & super glue would not hold it.

Being a pensioner, I am broke, but last night I borrowed money to purchase a second hand HP mini laptop for $100. It came with Windows 7 and a Free Trojan Virus.

I tried deleting the virus, but that did not work-- I deleted all old down loads, one which had the name something like Gotcha.

Then I tried taking it back to the earliest recovery point, but that did not work.

Tried reloading windows that did not work,

So what do I try next.

Format the disk and reload windows from known virus-free media (preferably media that has the latest service packs etc).

If you are running a modem directly from the PC, then make sure you have the firewall turned on before you connect the modem or you are likely to cop something off the internet pretty quickly.

better ways out of it than formating

what anti virus software is on it now?

    first three things to do

    1) download tdsskiller from kaspersky and run it

    2) fsbl from F-Secure - How To - Remove threats - Free Tools - Blacklight

    3) malwarebytes install and do full scan

    The other option is:
Go the the Eset page and do a computer scan in line using NOD32
after that go to the Malwarebytes and download the free version of it.

I would not format the HDD

Malbytes and Superantispyware. These two come to mind. What trojan is it exactly?

Get a copy of Ubuntu or some other Linux distro and install that. It's free. It works. What more do you want?

Neither superantispyware nor nod will do what tdss and fsbl do and will not directly sort the newer variants of tdss trojans

Depending on the issue you may need to run combofix as well

thanks guys for your replies. I am not sure why, but i did have a down load of "Snow Leopard" on it, which I understand is the Forbidden Fruit operating system. This Laptop is an HP, not the Forbidden Fruit.
