Thread: Optus cable, Netgear CG3000 and multiple routers.

Yes I have the CG3000 and find the speed excellent, I get close to 100mbs download speed now.
The worst issue with the CG3000 is dropout issues, both with the wired LAN and wireless.
They say the issues are now fixed with the latest firmware which Optus can update remotely.
As yet it has been good now thank goodness as I work from home quite a lot and do remote desktop installations and training via remeote desktop and Skype.

No I would not run the two Modem / routers, just buy a $30 switch to ditribute the net. You will probably have problems with IP address's if you do. I can't see how you can connect them anyway as the input to both is a Cable connection not a RJ45 port. Anyway the new Modem has a port for your print server.

I only have the one modem/router (CG3000) the other is just a router (WNR2000). Was thinking to run a line from CG3000 to Ethernet in on original router(used to input cable modem signal from modem to router). Seems a waste to shelve a new router. I can set the 2nd router to match or differ IP's of the CG, what I don't like is the inability to change the base IP of the CG3000. Have you changed the firmware in yours? Mine had a sticker over the USB saying it was not enabled but may be in later upgrades, plus the interface is restricted and is a Optus version. Have you found a work around for that, Netgear don't support it as it's a supplier item.

You just have to manually configure the Modem and Router.

To find out what firmware the CG3000 is running simply log into the Modem using your internet browser.
In the address bar enter: 192.168.0.1 press enter and then enter admin as the user and password as the password.
You should be now logged into the Modem.
Look at software version that is on the first screen, it should end in 21 to be the latest firmware.
The troublesome one was V17.

I'm not using the USB port on the Modem for my print server as my printer in network ready with a RJ45 port. It just plugs into on of the ports I have on the switch. Search or ask in the Whirlpool forum re the USB port.

I too had a great Dlink Router that I paid a lot of money for, it's sitting back in it's box resting now! It's cheap and simple setup just to use a switch with say 8 ports. That would give you 11 usable ports and the wireless as well to use.

In the Wiki articles it mentions connecting "the open LAN port on Router 1 to the first LAN port on Router 2." In this case should I plug it into the ethernet in port of router 2 (which in a std setup would take Ethernet traffic from the cable modem) which would leave the 4 ports free?

I'm ruing selling off a 48port g/bit managed switch. Would have been perfect bar where to fit it.
