How do I clean my computer up so it starts faster...

Hi everyone, looking for a bit of advise on getting my Windows 7 computer to start up a bit quicker. The kids have filled it up with all sorts of crap, which I have now deleted (They don't use the desktop any more), but it starts up really slowly from what it used to, and if I look in the task manager, there is all sorts of stuff running for no reason - I can stop them all one at a time, but how do I stop them from starting automatically when the computer is first switched on? Does that question make sense???

Sorry if this is a dumb question, my computer knowledge is limited when it comes to stuff like this. I can use all sorts of software, but never got interested enough to learn how to use Windows properly...
    Cheers - Gav

This is widely used and liked CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning. Gets rid of junk and controls what starts up.

Another option is to get rid of Windows and install Linux as your operating system.

Unless you have quite specific needs like playing games or using a particular program for something like accounting, CAD, music composition, or graphics work, you will hardly notice the difference after a short while.

It's free and it does all the things that the majority of casual users need a computer for.

it collects crap the same as windows... except you cant find nice easy utils to keep it clean anywhere near as easily

mac is not much better either but there are many more nice utils to help you keep it clean.

another useful rubbish removing util for windows is ATF Cleaner

You can stop several programs starting when the computer boots , just by amending the start menu.
My Vista enables me to do this and I have, so I am sure Windows 7 allows it. Things like Skype, acrobat etc.
BUT by far the slowest start up thing on mine is Trend Micro but you can work while it is starting up.

Just google it and I am sure you will find it easily.

Thanks, but had this before, but it won't run some of the programs I need. There was always someone who said you can get a certain program working by doing this and that, but it was more trouble than it was worth for a novice like me.

I found Linux just too hard. I went back to Windows.

That's just what I was looking for but couldn't find it anywhere - thanks. I'll be checking out some of the programs mentioned as well to see how good I can get it.
