HP Laptop - Turn off Touch Pad

I have a HP DV6 laptop (IE5) and the touch pad is in an annoying place - right where your palm and thumbs rest when typing - as a result I often loose stuff when the pad or left or right buttons are depressed while typing.

Now i can turn the touch pad off temporarily by tapping the top left corner twice but you have to do this everytime you use the computer or even just waking it up from screen saver.

So does anyone know how to 'long term' turn the touch pad off (and back on) so I do not have to it each time I use the computer. I have searched online for solutions but cannot find anything - only the short term process.

    Thanks

    idea only

How about disabling the "device" in device manager? I'm assuming xp or earlier, don't know vista or 7!

I use the touch pad all the time but I have to turn off the tap to click function at least because it totally bugs me, I'm too heavy handed. It's in Control Panel/Mouse. You may be able to disable the whole thing there. The other option may be in the BIOS. Cheers

Thanks for the responses - I went into device manager and uninstalled it but it reinstalls itself when you turn the computer back on.

I guess that it is something I have to live with but it is really annoying. Not an issue with my old Toshiba where the touch pad was in the centre of the computer but with the HP it is to the left where my hand rests.

    Thanks

Can you not right click it in device manager and disable it instead of uninstalling it?

Only option is to update driver or uninstall.

    Turn off the touchpad
Most HP notebooks come with an on/off button near the touchpad. If you do not wish to use the touchpad at this time, press this button. Press it again when you wish to use this accessory again.
If the notebook does not have an on/off button for the touchpad, touch and hold the top-left corner of the touchpad for approximately 5 seconds to disable it and do this again to activate it. When the touchpad is disabled, a small light will illuminate on the touchpad and an icon will appear briefly of the touchpad with a line through it. When the touchpad is activated, a small light will turn off on the touchpad and an icon will appear briefly of the touchpad.
Alternatively, if the notebook does not have an on/off button for the touchpad, and you wish to turn the touchpad off, open the Mouse Properties window, select the Device Settings tab, and click the Disable button. You may re-enable the touchpad from here at any point.
Did you try holding the top left corner for 5 seconds instead of double clicking it? Also should be able to disable it in the Mouse section of Control Panel.

Holding the top left corner had no impact at all - however looking in the relevant section of the Control Panel there is a whole section on the touchpad - including a little check box that disables the touch pad when an external mouse is connected - all automatic now - no touch pad when mouse connected - no mouse connected and the touchpad automatically comes to life.

Thanks for the information - exactly what I was after.

    Cheers
