    Reading old harddrives

    Hi all,

    I have a few old(xp) harddrives that I would like to go thru the files and wipe some stuff off them,but save the rest.
    I have bought a Ritmo HDD docking station,but I cant seem to get it to see the files on the drives.
    Does anyone know of an external docking station that will accept old HDD so that you can view them.
    The only other way I know is to buy a cheap desktop and put a clean HDD in it and throw the xp disk into it,so then I can add the old HDD's into it.

    I run an XP desktop and I'm not far from you if that helps. I have a spare desktop I recently retired that may also be useful to you. It's my backup in case this one fails. It would need a HDD to get it operational.

    Plenty of USB HDD adapters that will take ST506, IDE, PATA, SATA etc and Can be had for $25

    Why not just install them into your machine as a secondary drive, copy the files and format the disc. There should be spare power connections in there and all you would need is an ide/sata cable depending on what sort of drive it is.

    Other machine is a notebook.It dont have the room,otherwise I would have done what you suggested ages ago.

    I might take up your offer,as long as you dont need it.

    It's in the shed at the moment - unused, unloved. I probably have a monitor, too. Plenty of keyboards and mice.

    I use hdd docks and caddys all the time, is the drive spinning up in the dock you are using? can you hear it? its possibly dead, is it a IDE or SATA drive?
