how to cut a scene out of a video?

I have a video on my computer that i have uploaded from a DVD and i want to be able to edit it, by that i mean that there is a few seconds of the video i want to capture and make it a smaller individual video.I don't know how to do this i have tried once before but it did not go to well. so any help would be great.
    Thanks Tony

you should be able to do it in movie maker that you get with windows however its very limited in what output file extension it will give you but if all you want to do is upload to youtube it will be fine for what you want ass long as you dont want to get fancy

it is only for a one off so i dont want to buy anything. i had a go with movie maker but it just did not seem to work because of the format i think. i was wondering if there might be some free ones online even if it is a trial.

    Try AutoGordianKnot
    |MG| AutoGK (Auto Gordian Knot) 2.55 Download

Click on link, the click internode-Australia (near top middle)
    then save.

This will convert a dvd in the drive to AVI for Windows Movie Maker.
