New wireless router modem password or mac address
I received a new Netgear wireless router modem from Optus today.
I have set the LAN up using password security.
On my old router I went to the extent of MAC address security but it was PITA as every time my kids would come I would have to feed in their MACS and they changed phones and Ipads all the time. Also once the kids have new ones the old ones are lost in space and sit there as how do you know which ones are now defunct?
So in the expert opinion, is password security enough or should I go through the exercise of collecting and inputting MAC addresses?
PS, my important paswords are encripted in Trend Micro "vault"

Phillip - strong passwords are fine to protect the router admin. MAC addresses can be spoofed, so not anywhere near as strong.
The next step to secure it would be to use WPA2 with AES encryption on the WLAN, with a long/difficult/random passphrase. Some old devices only support WPA - so that is ok, just not as safe as WPA2.
Cheers,
Rob
