if you already have a wireless router you could just buy a wireless hard drive dock and then use that with your existing setup.
I have a pair of netgear wireless routers, you're welcome to come and have a go at one of them for a tryout
I have a macbook and am looking for the most economical solution to do wireless backup (using time machine) and to have wireless access to an external hard drive for storage/access.
I have a optus netgear wireless modem/router.
Is it possible to connect an external hard drive to the modem/router to do this?
I'm pretty sure Apple time capsule will do both. However, I have an external hard drive.
thanks

thanks Dave I had a look at those.
I have discovered a thing called a NAS (ethernet/USB ) adapter. Below is an example:
Umart Computer Notebook&PC Parts - Umart OnlineĀ® Your one stop Computer Shop for computer parts, notebook and new system
It sits between the wireless modem/router and external HDD. The USB external HDD plugs into the adapter which then connects to the wireless modem/router by ethernet cable.
At $39 its a cheap solution.
Has anyone had experience at using this type of setup?
thanks

yes thats evolution of the tech that I was talking about.
the unit I was talking about runs a power supply and a proper computer HD they started out wired moved to wireless
My routers have a USB port that I can use to share a printer or hook up almost any usb media drive to (including my phone If I set it to Drive mode) and access through just the router, (I can have everything else unplugged and off, once setup if the router is on and the drive is plugged in its sharable to any wifi device that can do file access work)
