I currently have no backup on the macbook. So one drive would be a step up. I know a seagate barracuda 2tb sata3 drive is only another $100. However, the message is pretty clear. I am already going overboard.

It will only be for a month or two. After the NAS demonstrates its value (not apparent at the moment to swmbo) I will be able to buy another HDD.
After its all set up, test by moving all her photos to another location on her machine, wait until she notices they are missing, then calmly proceed to recover them from the NAS.

If you survive, it will then be clear to her how important it is

And as others have said - HDD's can fail. I prefer to view it as they WILL fail, so what happens when they do is the important thing to consider.

Also, you mentioned about wireless access (backups??). Be aware that if you start pumping large backups across your wireless, not only is it likely slower compared to direct connection, its also going to choke the wireless for other users.

We have at least 10 out on different sites and never had a problem. Problems with Buffalo, Thecus and Giganas. Hard drives these days are absolute shockers and it doesn't matter how much you pay for them. Fingers crossed as far as I'm concerned.
