    Very good question.
I recently upgraded a fellows XP to Windows 7 at his insistence (despite my advice not to) and it runs very slow.
We still use XP at work. They have been trialling a few Windows 7 machines but they have been exhibiting compatibility issues with other software we use.
Why should I upgrade? On past form, Windows upgrades have been wrought with compatibility issues.

I think it would depend on what hardware you have.
XP was a nice stable OS but most PC's of that vintage only had about 1Gb ram.
Win7 sucks on anything less than 2Gb in my experience, and I'd expect Win8 to require at least that and probably more to run nicely (I could be wrong though).

    Thanks guys

Compatibility issues was one reason I haven't upgraded from XP & the fact that so far I'm happy with it . Not that I know much. Will stick with XP for awhile longer I think

ok so is it worth it over 8?
and what advantages/disadvantages does it have over 7?
sorry for the badly written post
i understand that you probably don't "technically" need that voucher...
They're rather trusting folk at Microsoft - the $15 deal does not require one to provide a receipt. Details here.

You'll just enter the details of the PC you bought and it'll generate a new voucher to put into the box during the checkout process.

    Best of luck with it.

The changes from 7 aren't that amazing tbh. Having a touchscreen notebook was one of the only reasons for bothering with the upgrade in my case. And this PC now works like it should have when I bought it a couple of years ago. Windows 7 never gave this PC the functionality that it was meant to have. Now it has Windows 8 it's given it a new lease of life.

win xp is nice and stable now SP3, but when it first came out it had numerous issues.

    Vista was pretty poor.

Win 7 was good from launch - easily best OS release from Microsoft

Interested in win 8 but win 7 is humming along so well...

Hi guys, can anyone tell me what the cheapest price I can obtain Windows 7 or 8 for is, as I'm currently running a Mac and, due to various programmes I need to use, have to run Windows? I saw something on the net suggesting around US $65 but in Australia even the educational version is around $430 for which price I could buy an 11" with it loaded.
    thanks in advance
    cheers Gerald
