our other computer is a PC which my girlfriend uses.........she has three email accounts and always checks them via the web

i assume it straight forward to download outlook?

i also assume it will cost and there will be differnet levels?

Thunderbird is the Firefox email program. I use it on my computer but end up doing all my email on my phone.
I used Eudora for years but it wasn't supported/updated for years but I think it might have been now.
You used to be able to get a free light version of Outlook (Outlook Express). I assume you still can.

Mozilla Thunderbird (free download) has been good for me for the last few years. Make sure you don't let it import any settings from existing email programmes (if you don't want any old data present on the computer), manually add your email account and then check the settings on how long to leave emails on your server. That way you can download your emails and also view them online until you let them expire or delete them manually. Check what size your online email storage size is and see if you ever get close to filling it.

If your GF is still going to use webmail and also a mobile device in addition to the PC it's worth checking to see if the services she uses support IMAP. It's streets ahead of POP when it comes to accessing email from multiple devices.

The downside is that you are limited by the amount of email the provider allows you to store on the server.

GMail gives you over 10Gb storage which is more than enough for most people. Windows Live is about the same. Optus on the other hand gives users something like 40mb storage which is just plain pitiful.
