Laptop+iTunes+external HD
Hey all,
I have a smallish HP laptop as my only PC. I have iTunes and have just bought a second iPod (classic 160G
so I can transfer all of my CDs via Lossless. Problem is I dont want to load up the computer too much as I use it for work etc and its already slugish
Is there some way to have the Lossless files stored on my external HD so not on the LT hard drive?
I only have 1 internal hard drive (C) and its currently at 69GB free of 148GB
cheers,
Serg

In preferences > advanced there is an option to set the location of the iTunes folder. Set that to use your external drive.
On the Mac if you hold down option ( most likely to be Alt on Windows) when you start iTunes you get a dialogue to either create a new library or to choose an existing library. This allows you to switch between multiple iTunes libraries. It could be handy if you wanted to have a small library for traveling and a home library.
The other thing you can do is to uncheck "Copy file to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" in preferences > advanced. This will allow you to "add to library" the files while keeping them lossless files where ever you want to store them. The only problem with this approach is that the iTunes links will break if you move or rename the folders or hard drive. I did this for a long time, with a folder structure that I manually managed and it worked well. I've gotten a bit lazy in the past few years and I let iTunes manage the library on my music server.
cheers
