    Help pls Lap Top problem

I know little about Windows as I use Mac.
My sister's son's school lap top is displaying this error below. The School Tech "expert" didn't know how to fix. and there is school work he needs to rescue from it.
    error:
When you turn on the computer now it takes a long time to come on and then we get a message like below:

    Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 ( BUILD 083)
    Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

***JMicron JMC25X Gigabit Ethernet Controller Version
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M)F: Exiting PXE ROM.

Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key....

    Windows Error Recovery

Windows failed to start..... A recent hardware or software might be the cause

If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly. Startup Repair
can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during
    startup, choose Start Windows Normally
(use the arrow keys to highlight your choice).

    Launch Startup Repair ( recommended)
    Start Windows Normally

When we click on "launch Startup Repair ( reccommended), it just goes to a black blank screen with the cursor arrow on it and it stays there and does nothing. We then have to turn off the computer.

    regards, Mario

Difficult to diagnose without having it in front of me Mario, but it's somewhere between a corrupt boot segment, needing a repair of the Windows instal (you'll need the original Windows disk to boot from, press F8 as it boots and hit the repair option), and a hard drive that's about to pop it's clogs.

Easy fix that one, its trying to PXE boot from the NIC. goto to BIOS and change boot order to HDD and also disable the PXE boot option

But it could also have got to the network boot option because the main HDD is no longer bootable

I don't have it in front of me, but the hard drive is not given as an option in the boot menu.
I thought it could be a dicky power or HDD sata connector. I had trouble with a desktop pc, and it was a loose sata connection.

I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to pull the back cover off and check the connections, never opened a lap top before.

re data i might be able to put a linux boot disc in and recover some important files from the HDD??

It sounds like errors in the boot section of the hard drive. That could indicate the hard drive is on its way out. Pull it out and put it in an external usb enclosure and get the info while you can by plugging it into another working computer. Then seek professional help.

Hi That Message Generally means it a Dead HDD and it is trying to boot to the Next Device in the Boot sequence being "the Network", it cant boot from there as home PC's Are generally not setup to Network Boot from a LAN thats why it is saying Check Cable, you can try removing the HDD cover underneath and Disconecting and Reseating the Cable to tthe HDD sometimes they lose conection for one reason or another.

    What Brand/Model Laptop is it??
