What, if anything, are you using to manage your music collection? iTunes, Windows Media Player, Media Monkey, something else? What phone do you have and what are you using to play music on the phone?

Most music files will have information contained in tags within each file itself, and decent media managers use these tags rather than the file names themselves. The files listed as "Track 1" were ripped from CD without the tags being created. Creating the tags after the fact is "painful", and it is much easier to re-rip the music using something that will automatically tag the files during the rip process. You do have the CD's right?

Once all your files have tags you can then set up the media manager to automagically rename the files to use the tags you specific, which makes life easier for situations where the file name matters.

Also note that Windows sometimes does not show you the actual file names for some media, as it recognises the directory as being (say) all music and it shows you the tags rather than the file names.

I do not use anything to manage my music - they just exist as files on my laptop and I do not play the music from the laptop. My phone is a Motorola Defy and i use whatever android uses to play the music - can play via Song, Artist or Album but not file name - hence I am wanting to enter the Song name into the Song Tag as the information in many cases is not there.

Playing around on the laptop late last night I found that the tag information can often be edited by selecting the relevant song in windows explorer and then going into file properties and then selecting "details" - in here most of the tags can be edited. Using this I have been able to save the correct song name rather than Track or a blank entry.

However there are some where changes cannot be made so I assume there maybe some copyright issue or something else embedded in the file.

If you look about you will find software which manages your MP3 tags. I use MP3Tag. There are others you might find suit your preferences better.

These can be set up to automatically change in bulk the title tag of an mp3 to be the same as the file name plus many other tricks involving manipulation of tags and file names.

Look at how your files are displayed on phone . change this

Have a look in the Android Play Store for an app named PlayerPro Music Player, it allows you to access music based on folders and file names in addition to the usual artists, albums and other embedded information.

There's a free trial version which lasts for about 30 days but it didn't take me long to decide to purchase it as I have a huge collection of mp3 files just sorted in a folder structure on my PC. I just copy these across to the storage on my android phone using Windows Explorer.
