If you are sure your mac meets the minimum system requirements and you can back up all your data and have the ability to reinstall your apps then you could do a disk erase and install as per this guide:

I have done this on 2 macs and it works well.

I have a 2009 iMac, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 and 668 GB left on the hard drive.

None of the above means anything to me, and the words disk erase sound a little permanent.....

If nothing else works I may be tempted...

You need at least the following

Lion System Requirements

1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Upgrading to Mountain Lion

To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion

1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

Check you meet the above requirements, check which system is currently installed. you should be ok with the hardware you have mentioned.

Without stating the obvious, I assume you have paid for mountain lion via the Apple store. You can download copies but they won't load until you actually pay for them.

Take it to your local mac store and ask them - see what it costs; that's the one thing I've found great - their backup and customer service. Mind you, we pay for it up front and I've always done it under warranty.
Mind you, I took mine in for some other minor problems and got snow leopard to mountain lion for free but then I've lost the ability to upgrade iphoto and imovie - now they (app store) want me to pay for it, so I'll go back and kick and scream and they'll likely give it to me for free.

Well I'm back on line.
Mountain Lion would not install because 4 years ago I made a mistake and backed up to the internal hard drive. The operating system of the time had a fault and even though I rectified the mistake and spent the next 4 yrs backing up to my external hard drive it still registered my internal drive as a back up.

So erase and internet install required. This got me Lion back and fixed the issue so Mountain Lion installed.

Then auto migrate did not detect my latest back-up, it only found one from 2010. So manual migration required. All done and everything working fine.

Not that I can take any credit for it, it was all Apple support. Free, over the phone, 40 min a night for 3 nights (had to wait overnight for stuff to down load/back-up). They even phoned me back each night at a pre-arranged time. Not bad for a $20 purchase.

What was the $20 purchase? A support plan?

No, that was the cost of Mountain Lion. I had Lion already and went onto the App Store and it said download Mountain Lion for $20, so I did.

I have learnt that it is cheeper to get the system upgrades while they are still supported by Apple.
