    Desk Top Arranges Itself

I guess like most people I have the icons on my desktop arranged in a certain way to suit my use. However about once a month and usually at night the computer thinks it knows better than me and rearranges them in a nice ordered fashion but one that is no use to me - I rearrange them back to how I want them and about a month later it jumbles them up again.

Any ideas why it does this and how do I stop it. It is a Win 7 system.

    Thanks

The only way to stop that AFAIK is to pick up the whole computer and gently throw it out the window. Works best if your not on the ground floor.

I'm using win7 too, but don't experience this that often.... are you sure someone isn't just having a lend of you?

Download and install a software package called "Fences" (free version) - it's great and allows you to setup your desktop as you want it and it stays that way.

Is it auto installing updates & then rebooting in the middle of the night?

No one else uses the laptop

Thanks - might give it a go

While I have auto updates on it tends to do updates when turning off and when you turn the computer on. However irrespective of whether it is doing updates or not it shouldn't change the desktop layout.

It is very frustrating. Interestingly my desktop which never gets used but is on all the time and also runs win 7 doesn't have this issue.

    Thanks everyone for your comments.

Fences Free Version is no longer Free - you get a 30 day trial then have to purchase.

Just thought.... I never/very rarely turn my computer off, so maybe that's somethign to do with it. I find that when I turn it off somethign goes wrong, so I just leave it run.

I hope you sort it out

Its W7. My laptop and desktop do this regularly. The laptop loses desktop links often too so I have to keep a copy of the desktop folder elsewhere and copy it back from time to time. A colleague of mine thinks its something to do with having a second screen.

I'm running dual screens at home and at work.

The PC at work has decided to make the second screen the default at boot, so it transfers my desktop icons accordingly. I now switch the second monitor off and leave it off until after it has booted into Windows.

Windows also has an auto arrange feature for desktop icons. It can be toggled by right clicking the desktop, selecting view followed by Auto arrange icons (Windows 7, pretty certain it works for previous versions, haven't tried it on Windows 8).
