    Readyboost

I have an older Acer Travelmate lappy that could do with a memory increase
It has a card reader so it could use
    memory stick
    memory stick pro
    SD card
    multimedia card
    and x-D picture card

very hard to find a plain SD (not SDHC) card anymore
will any of the others be fast enough to work?

indeed, as you mention the laptop could do with memory but you quote external storage devices.

Generally, computer memory or RAM is internal to the laptop and I'm sure there are ways to increase RAM on most laptops. The type of RAM you would need depends on the laptop hardware, i.e. what it can support.

The cards you mention may indeed be called "memory" but you can't use these to increase the internal memory the laptop uses.

If you are running out of storage (ie no more room for videos, photos etc), I would consider getting a USB external hard drive.

Sounds like a swap file to me.

    Increase your RAM

Need extra memory? To check, hold down Alt + Ctrl + Del buttons and click on the Performance tab. Here you can see physical memory and a graph showing percentage useage. If the actual memory useage is greater than the physical memory, your computer will run real slow. If the memory useage is less than the physical memory then your computer is running as fast as it can. the exception here is where the actual useage is near the max and may occasionally go over the max that the physical memory can use.If you need more memory, the best way is to replace or add to your existing RAM. RAM is cheap nowadays and may only cost you $40 to upgrade. The use of Ready Boost is speed limited to the speed of the USB port Which is tens, possibly thousands of times slower than the internal RAM.

Note 32 Bit machines can only access 3 Gb of RAM, so your maximum purchase is probably 2 x 2Gb sticks of RAM. Either look up your units specs to see what type of RAM is used or get someone knowledgeable to identify your type of RAM for you. You can not put the wrong type in, but it saves time if you have the right RAM first time round. I get a lot of my stuff from techbuy.com.au (I am not affiliated with them).
