Yeah but from the road onwards it will be owned by Telstra. From the road to your house you own it. I just went through all this with Optus and tpg trying to get internet at my property Telstra won't replace my line be cause it's 500mtrs long and I have to do it at my own expense. BUT when NBN rolls out then it's up to NBN to change it because everything's changing to optic fibre. Everything's changing once again. Telecom to Telstra now to NBN.
If your on satellite broadband like IPstar then it's different again your on there playing field.

Telstra own all the copper from the exchange to your home. It's referred to as ULL (Unbundled Local Loop) when it's 'leased' to other providers, and connected to their equipment at the exchange.

A friend of mine has often used one of the following:

Interrupt their initial spiel, and say, "I'm a consulting engineer. My time is valuable. If you want to continue this discussion, I need your credit card details. You will be charged my standard rate of $275.00 per hour, or part thereof. Minimum charge is one hour. Is it a Visa, Mastercard, or Amex? There is a 7.5% surcharge for Amex."

Or, (without giving them time to answer anything) "I'm Detective Sergeant Mike Wilson, from the Homicide squad. What is your name? Where are you calling from? What is your relationship to the deceased person who owned this phone? What were you doing three hours ago? Who can verify your whereabouts at the time in question? Do you have any prior convictions? We're tracing this call and will have a crew on the way to talk to you immediately. Don't go anywhere until they arrive!"

I had a similar spiel run by me a while back. An unknown number called my mobile. He claimed he was from the Victoria police , wondering why some dead guy had my number as the last logged in his phone. Got several more calls over a few days , each ending with my appearance was necessary. Wouldn’t give a contact number though, so not sure of the nature of any potential scam.

Nope. I have aerial Optus HFC broadband cable from the house to the power pole across the road. From there the Optus cable travels aerially along the street. All the houses in my street are connected to Optus (and from walking around my area and looking, so are all the houses around here) - even the neighbours next door who don't have internet and who have a Telstra landline for their phone (they are with Telstra). The Telstra cables are underground.

I have no connection from the house to the Telstra pits in front of my property. The Telstra feed in cable was dug up many years ago when I had the front yard landscaped.

Optus did have its own cable network as well. It sold this to the NBN a few years ago. In such a poor condition that it needed complete replacement/ refurb, if the media got it correct.

The HFC was put in by Telstra in the early 90s for foxtel and Optus. I'm surprised that Optus actually own it but they should have a piece of the pie too. Telstra had the monopoly forever.
I don't know who owns what now that NBN is in its all changed.
