    actually the configuration part.
    repeated failure.

    8.1
    have sfc/scannow'd,
first scan came up with a corrupt file, second scan clear.

have stopped all non windows services and tried,, and failed.
tried Mr Fixit, comes up with the same errors each time,,

Had exactly the same problem over the weekend, small batches seemed OK but then I had problems with them (it had been a while since the laptop had been fired up).

Made the decision I had been thinking of for a while - back to windows 7.

I had a similar issue with my Win 7/ updated to Win 8.1 box.

Search from tiles screen stopped working, icons for certain windows programs were lost, error messages relating to urlmon.dll when I tried to do anything network admin related.

The system file checker found errors, but couldn't fix them. System refresh from the Win 8 install disk fell over. Decided to wait for a rainy day to do a complete system install.

Then, after the last round of Windows updates all is sweet again.

Methinks a previous update was a dud.

only real problem i have found with windows updates in 8.1 is that if you do them some will fail until you reboot and then they magically work...

renaming the windows.old directory fixes a multitude of things oddly enough...
