    Upgrade Options

    Hi all,
I am currently working in Melbourne and I want to upgrade the desktop at my family home in Brisbane. So that's my first challenge!

Ok, the second challenge is that I know little about such things, so could anyone suggest some options to upgrade the following (if it's at all possible):

    Gigabyte H55M-S2H MOBO with Intel I7 CPU 860 @ 2.8GHZ
    4GB 1333 Memory
ATI Radeon HD 5700 series Graphics Card.

    Any suggestions? Tips, Tricks?

    Cheers
    Ralph

    what is it used for?
    video editing?
    spreadsheets?
    youtube?

nearly always the easy upgrade is a better video card(PSU?), though 4gb of ram is a bit of a concern ,,

I build PCs for a giggle, and if I was in Brisbane I would do it for you.

Firstly, would need to know what you are going to use it for - if you aren't playing games then upgrading your GPU (graphics card) is pretty pointless.

Next, Tombie is right about the RAM, get more of it if you want a cheap fix. If you are running windows 32 bit (any windows 32 bit) then no point cause 32 bit has a useable ram limit of 4gb. If you are running 64bit windows (right click on my computer and properties, then under operating system) then go out and get more RAM, just make sure its the same frequency as your current.

If you want to upgrade your CPU, then I would need to look at your motherboard and know what type it is so I can recommend the right one. Alternatively, you can do a mild overclock, but would only do that if you had some semblance of an idea.

The other piece of the puzzle is your PSU, if you overload it it won't power anything and your PC will crash.

Fill in the blanks to the questions above and I will reply back with my best advice, and a bit of advice on how to get the most out of it.

This is taking into account you have already done the obvious, remove all programs you dont use, defrag it and open it up and clean out the dust etc (computers are electrical, the hotter they are the less conductive the parts which means slower).

Gigabyte H55M-S2H only has two ram slots,,
you could (only)double your ram for less than $100,,
the graphics card is around 5 years old, still, it is a DX11 so dont bin it,, yet.
an AMD R9 270X will run you around 2 hundred,,
