computer slows down for 5 minutes

I have an old HP Laptop which is running on Win 7 professional 32 bit and has Trend Micro maximum security.
I recently upgraded my Modem/router to a Netgear N600 with Netgear Genie installed on the laptop.
I run IE11. I had Chrome loaded until recently but have now deleted it, although I still get messages about Google Messenger. (Chrome is not compatible with Java)

The problem is that about 15-20 minutes after booting or waking up, the computer becomes completely unresponsive or VEEERY slooow for about 5 minutes.
Now I have tried to analyse which programs are causing the slowdown but by definition I cannot get into the performance manager until it speeds up , which is too late.

I did a google and found a free download program called " What is my Computer doing", but the only review stated it had a Trojan in it.

So I don't know if it is Google mail, Trend Micro ( which I suspect is downloading definition updates), or what. I do know that Adobe updates slow both my network computers to a crawl while they are downloading but this is a once in a while thing.

I also am pretty conscientious in deleting unused programs and cleaning the startup menu eg not opening Adobe until needed.
Any ideas on a clean program download that I can use to log program CPU and disc usage .
    Regards Philip A

try disabling things that can be disabled like trend and net genie

if it was a nix machine i would say monitor iostat vmstat and netstat

in windows i would try getting perfmon running before the slow down kicks in...

There's a pattern there, 20 minutes after boot slows for 5 minutes...

Something is scanning and using the system resources. As incisor says, disable the anti virus and net genie programs to see if that helps.

BTW, I've noticed NetGenie likes to use OpenDNS. I had some real issues in the past using OpenDNS (long story, won't go into it) with unexpected bandwidth use. OpenDNS solved one problem, but created others. While I can't be absolutely sure using an overseas DNS server was causing the problem, anecdotal evidence suggested it might, and once removed (the issue forcing me to use a DNS server other than Telstra's had been resolved) I didn't have bandwidth issues again.

It appears that it was Netgear Genie causing the problems. I disabled it on start up and service seems back to normal.
The activity for the CPU was SVChost.
Trend Micro stills slows it down while doing a scan but I can live with that.
