    ideas for new server

our fire station needs a new server and ive been tasked to find the hardware.

we only have modest needs. i dont have a budget but the smaller the better.

needs to able able to run server 2012 with active directory, only 50 users, small file server and small db which is only used a few times a week, rack mountable. it only connects to 6 workstations.

any ideas to get me started would be great thanks

Dell poweredge servers start from a couple of grand if you have the operating system and db software. Always found them to be as good as the rest. I think the R320 (if still available ) may do what you need without breaking the bank.

Hang around the dumpsters at a big city office block - you won't have to wait long to find something. I know a coup,e of people that have quite good home servers that have cost zip.

Don't know anything about the specs of them, but one guy is an IT dude and runs and backs up all the computers in his house (lots) with his freeby

I bought a cheap dell desktop from grays for 300. Had an i5 I think, I then upped the memory to 12gb and it's been running a base ubuntu hypervisor with a linux web server and windows server 2008 as virtual macines.
The WS2008 is running exchange and has been no issue.
I wouldn't advise the hypervisor xen route though, it's been more effort to keep up to date and makes life too hard for me. When I rebuild it will be a standard linux or windows base and then oracle virtual box VMs running headless. That makes recovery and backup a doddle.

Depending on the model, can be cheap or dear. Haven't had too many nasty ones though.
Don't know if I'd want my local fire station to be running on dumpster hardware, but if budget is the main concern, try asking some local corporate mob to donate some hardware.
