Have the blue screen of death.
Syste m repair found no problem with win7 boot but it crashes as soon as I input my password.

Interesting.
A friend had exactly the same problem a week ago, cratering her computer at the login screen after a round of windows updates.
I had to go into safe mode and run a system restore to before the updates occurred to get her going again.
Cheers

I'm running Win 7 Pro 64-bit.
Over the last couple of days, every time I shut the PC down, it goes through an update - I assume it's the same update. When I boot up, it wants to install an update for Java.
Something is not finishing in the updates.

Well after umpteen attempts to restore to different restore points which didn't complete, and using the system repair disc which does the same thing??, and looking at reinstalling Win 7, I did one more "repair my computer" and away she went!!!!!!
I noted that the windows update window has popped up again saying that 21 important updates and 3 non essential are ready for download, so my assumption is that finally a restore has taken most probably within "repair my computer"
So what do I do now? It seems that one of the updates is corrupting the Win 7 files but which one of the 21+3. I don't feel like going through each one to see.
What a waste of 4 hours. It taught me something though. All these fixes don't work if you cannot actually boot into Win 7.
I will try to do a system image but AFAIR ,WIN 7 doesn't like to do them onto an external hard disc as it asks for discs.
Funny I backed up only yesterday after a friend had his files encrypted by the Russians with a ransom note for $640. He can buy a new laptop with that amount, but I need a full image. AAAARGH.
Any further info would be appreciated.

THe problem with the disc was actually that is was FAT32 when it has to be NTFS. I converted it as per MS instructions and it is now imaging my C disc onto my WD external hard disc.
Just to follow up.
When I shut down last night, I didn't notice the exclamation mark and the computer installed all the outstanding updates without a problem!
I did notice that it had tried to reinstall several updates that had already been installed ( showing failed) , so it had duplicated the downloads.
I am surprised by the crash as it is the first I have had with a Microsoft PC operating system in 30 years of operation.
Anyway it seems to be stable now, so I added an extra Gig of RAM which I had bought giving 3gigs which I understand is the max for 32 bit and its going faster than ever for a 6 year old $455 Compaq computer.

Philip, mine did similar thing a few weeks ago, although I didn't get the blue screen of death, it just wouldn't boot up in any way, shape or form.
It took me a while, but eventually I was able to system restore back a week and go from there.
It also seemed to do it after trying to update.
Mines a new HP running Win7 Pro 64bit.
I would imagine some of the updates is getting your systems ready for Win 10.
Yes I know some of you WONT be upgrading,, but Microsoft doesnt know that,,
but what it is doing to anyone that has reserved a win 10 is pre-downloading files to make the switchover quicker,,
wouldnt be the first time Microsoft took a 4" paint brush to a problem,,,
