    Recording Quality

Can anyone enlighten me as to what determines recording quality in a PC please?

I record podcasts and whole radio shows and then burn them to CDR's to play in the shed or the car. I have an old HP Pavillion c2005 and a HP Laptop c 2013. When I record on the former , the sound feels warm and has depth to it. When I record on the latter - the sound is shallow and tinny. I have tried messing with the levels - but to no avail. I suppose I should at some point retire the pav but I'm worried I'll lose the good sound quality.
Any thoughts would be gratefully received.
    cheers,

Pc's are very poor at clocking the digital signal. Also the da converter in the pc wont be any good either.
