    bluegene processor board...

with 1024 of these it was touted to be the first computer that could run windows and IE without excessive delays

also the first computer with linear expansion, you just keep adding more racks and boards

each one of those boards is 2 computers in its own right. CPU, motherboard, memory, I/O controller, bios and instruction set

bluegene is a supercomputer that started out with 1024 of those boards (from memory I may need correcting) that instead of being parallel processors like all its predecessors are networked and the OS is essentially modular.

    as a vastly oversimplified comparison.

at the end of the day say you wanted to build up your windows 98 computer from a single core to a double core processor system youd have to completely shut down, pull it apart, replace all the hardware, fire it up, rewrite the software, reboot it get it stable then use it. when you wanted to go to quad core youd have to do the same.

Bluegene works more like adding another computer to the network you just build up what you want, plug it in, give it a network location and address and then you can make use of it.

in mechanic speak, its about the same as having a modular engine design where when you need more grunt you just bolt an extra pair of cylinders onto the ones you already have.
