    Samsung S4 from overseas provider

Being a Scrooge, I bought my FIRST smartphone on evilbay, a Samsung S4 which I imagine, is surplus stock from the "SPRINT" (USA) network.
Currently, it's operating system is version 4.4 point something.
Unlocked, and currently I'm with ALDI as the unused credit lasts for up to 12 months... which suits my needs perfectly.

I'm told that being a 'foreign' fone, it cannot 'update' itself to the newer (Aussie-supplied) OS, lollipop 5.

    Is this true?

    - I've tried to "INSTALL" the latest update, but it only gets partway through then gives up.

Still on a steep learning curve, the other day the phone wasted $41 on some 'data' use. Have NO idea what it was doing, maybe trying to download yet another (useless) SAMSUNG OS update !

    might be true....

I've had a personal bad experience with using a foreign carrier unlocked phone on an australian netowrk trying to update over the network.

Removing the sim, then doing the update over a suitable wifi source worked.

    on edit...

what it was doing was trying to update all of the app softwares to the lastest version.

all the google stuff, the skype type stuff, the samsung apps, the inbuilt android apps and then it was going to try and install the update. In reality what it was trying to do was do all of that at once.

Giving up... it's chewed through a heap of 'data' again, got $3.00 credit left... Around $30 has vanished into thin air... I suspect that the email (hotmail) facility is what is doing the damage... that is, opening/checking email...especially if it contains images (junk mail etc) is using it up.

Will try changing my hotmail password via computer, as that confused it last time I changed it.... maybe it will stop it trying.!
Otherwise, its getting replaced with a 'dumb' phone...

Turn off wifi/ hotmail when your not using it.
When your in a woollies, turn on wifi, then turn on Hotmail.
Your ph will be using the woollies internet so you shouldn't have any loss of credits.

I use wow all the time whenever I'm in there shops and need to do some browsing.

    close.

turn mobile data OFF, turn wifi on.

there is an option so that updates only occur with permission and over wifi, turn that on.

if you really need it send me up the phone and I'll get it fully updated and set up fro you so it wont chew up your data.

You can certainly update the ROM to the latest published, but probably not by doing an over-the-air update like you would be able to do with an aus-purchased phone.

The easiest (which still might not qualify as easy) way is to download the correct model ROM from Sams Mobile (Firmwares - SamMobile), install ODIN and flash it.
