    Windows 10 critical error - start menu

    Hi,

    Has any Windows 10 user had to deal with the following error message:

    "CRITICAL ERROR. Your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in"

    (Apart from stating the bleedin' obvious, it doesn't get fixed at the next sign in!)

    This occurred yesterday without any warning when I tried to close down the machine by clicking the start menu button.

    It is a Windows 10 upgraded installation from 8.1 & the problem affects the Microsoft user account which I normally use to login. The Administrator account is unaffected.

    I have tried many suggested solutions from the web for this known issue, which has been reported since late last year. Microsoft seem not to have an explanation or solution for it, in spite of the months that have passed!!

    There are some suggestions that creating a new user account & moving over the old user files will work, or a system reset (read a clean install, by the sound of it).

    I would have liked to try my old local login rather than the Microsoft account. I used to be able to bring up a page with an option: "use local login instead", but this has now gone since the problem started.

    It is most annoying, as the W10 setup has been working perfectly for some months.

    Has anybody found a solution for this infuriating problem that does not require a system reset?

    Whenever you left-click the Start Menu icon. Right-click will still work. It's a blue box - MS obviously know about the problem, otherwise they wouldn't have created the nice blue box!!

    It is possible to work around it, but it it a PITA & reduces the productivity factor by at least 20%.

    Well if Micro$oft cant fix it--
    what about one of the start menu replacement programs?

    I've made some progress.

    As I previously said, the Administrator account is unaffected by the problem, so I tried an earlier Restore point rescue. It had not worked from the Microsoft account login, but did proceed OK when initiated from the Administrator account.

    This has restored the Start menu on the user account, & as soon as it was available I tried to see if I could restore the login to a local account. Happily this also worked.

    My researches on the 'net seem to indicate that this problem affects Microsoft accounts more than the local login ones. I'm not sure about this, but we will see how things go.

    Microsoft need to "extract the digit" & get this fixed!! Pronto!!!

    I will let you know what happens in the next few days.
