getting close now--
startup of 6 IBM HDD's ?
The Corsair HX 620 will spread full load across the 3 main rails if it has to,,
the spread will be 4hdd's and 2hdd's, off 2 rails. the only original psu to HDD cable I've found has two sata's connectors, so Corsair has no problem jumping two off one modular lead..
But I need to jump 4 off the other,
The 3 x 12V rails can carry 40A
should be ok??? yes?

Burnt freenas 9.10.1 iso to cd, loading stalled??
put it on a USB and successfully created FREENAS OS on seperate USB drive
returned all to normal on this PC, now just waiting for shop to open to pickup sata power cable.
-
short pause as i drink beer-- burp,,
father inlaws funeral today,,
hope you got home safe sheerluck,, burp,,
:p
-
Its funny,, ( and I need a giggle tonight:angel:)
I thought about this last week,,
what happens when one drive fails in FreeNAS?
no problem from the servers point of view,, it just reports a failed drive,,
but describes it how?
the blue one?
the last one in sequence?
the biggest one?
apparently I SHOULD have put a sticker with each drives serial number on the end before I installed it,,
yep... I can print a sticker that size,, no probs,, :censored:
can I even buy a sticker that size and write a 12 digit number on it?? :censored:
sigh,, anyone out there replaced a drive using freenas?
-
while the nvidea 610 is no great shakes,,
if this server needs NO monitor,,
then it needs no video card,, Ok?
but--
Will that Motherboard boot without a graphics card???
so----
I have to start up and go through all the FreeNAS options,
like install all the drives,
set up visitors, (guessing heaps here),
read write stuff, --
and AFTER all that, I hope everythings ok and switch the PC off, and remove the video card,,
and restart.
by this stage the server is all managed from a second PC,, but to fix anything i have to do the reverse of the above,,
all that for a $70 card;)
should be exciting:D
-
er, yea, sorry about those last couple,, while right,, not really your problem,,
any way,, picked up the 1-4 power cable today,, cabled it all up, 6 power, 6 sata, connected a nifty little usb keyboard and terrible microsoft mouse and hit the power button---
:o:D
its funny hearing 6 drives start first time --
then into bios then started off usb, then GRUB, then ????
lots of ???? stuff,,
then, after great skill and determination I get to the 14 choices,, and pick 14 and bail! :D
I need to relook at my options,,
I know I only need to tick a couple to actually get it to run--
and at the moment I cant hurt anything,,
I scored two more suitable drives today--:angel::angel::angel:
the MB has 8 sata,, but the HDD mounting may be less than, um, professional:p,, either way i need another sata splitter cable,,
shutdown was another of those what tha! moments as all 6 drive heads click off in quick succession. when you hear it--- :lol2:
oh and it DID start,, so my 12 V rail problem sorted itself-- ;)

any network people out there? :p
so, we have a house NBN modem(downstairs), with three PC's connected via wifi,
I have a nas that I want to stick up on a fridge(upstairs) near a powerpoint and out of the way, so no cables.
I have a spare modem and wifi adaptors.
I'd really not like to change networks to access the nas.
any ideas on the best way for the three PC's to access the nas?
and yes it runs, I have created one volume, set scrub dates, freenas reccommended Z2 with 6 drives. doing research on CPU and HDD idleing .....

Hi Pedro
Project sounds like fun!
Post your spare network stuff model numbers and the network gurus should be able to tell you if they can be configured as a network access point on your existing network.
Also with ZFS ( which I've played with a bit and use at home with Napp-It) you should consider setting the drives up as sets of mirrored Vdevs - see here as to why: http://jrs-s.net/2015/02/06/zfs-you-...evs-not-raidz/
Cheers
Simon

spares are,
wifi adaptor netgear evaw111,(funny number but works fine) telstra modem TG797v3, and newly found WAP netgear WG 602, my pc has a PW-Dn4210D, also a funny number but works fine.

as nothing is set in concrete yet(meaning no data loaded) I can swing 8 x 1TB drives,
so----
this will be 4 two disc mirror vdevs?
