Pedro, my understanding of FTTN and copper the last mile is that the old phone service will continue to coexist with the new service for a period of time (18 mths) after which it is simply switched off . The new service (NBN) then is the sole user of the copper. The copper is not actually removed as it is used by the VDSL modem. Those that have not switch over to NBN by that time will not have any service at all. FTTH is obviously different as there is no sharing of infrastructure between the old service and new (fibre all the way).

We have had fixed wireless NBN for some time.There was a lot of trouble with the change-over,they deleted our copper ADSL before the wireless was installed.
We still have copper line phone,due to Deb having had a stroke.Mobile phones towers go down 5 to 6 hours after a continuous outage,even quicker if there is a high load.
We sometimes loose the signal in extremely heavy rain,I guess much the same way a digital TV pixilates in the rain.
Our ADSL was quick as I'm only 200m or so from the exchange,the NBN wireless is heaps quicker,especially when downloading videos etc.
In our case NBN fitted the dish and decoder for free,Telstra provided the modem/router for free DIY instal.We were eligible for free Telstra instal due to the medical condition of Deb.Should have taken them up on it on hindsite,all the Telstra NBN is done off-shore and thos pakis or whoever they are start covering their backs when they have stuffed up.Only way out was to call billing and say I'm not paying a cent and I will call Optus if an AWEstralian case manager doesn't call to sort it.They did:):):):):):)

Had a look at our area the other day. It states that NBN is available, but there has been no advertisement of this. If I had not looked it up I would not of known. Were they at one stage talking of only running fiber to the exchange then using the existing copper to homes ?

We are in country WA,we got fixed wireless wich is like you get on mobile phones but NBN internet only.I did hear they are doing country towns like this to get their contracted connection numbers up.
They could well be using fixed wireless in urban areas too.

When the copper is turned off, I wonder if other providers can continue to use it if we don't want Bigpond ?
Or will Telstra Bigpond have a monopoly ?

No one will use the copper.

Telstra do not have a monopoly. You can easily go with another ISP.
Telstra do, however, offer options, at a price.
Telephone only service.
Telephone in the UNI-V port.

The other ISPs I have spoken to are not interested. They're only interested in offering a bundled service. My bundle is less than $40pm.
