do you install your own?

and it's still costing so much.....

Excuse my ignorance, but what comes in an NBN kit? NBN has only just started to be laid around our area.

All i have heard (not sure if its true or not) is that its $800 to connect?!

Shouldn't cost you a cent.

The kit Rob is referring to, would be a pre-configured router supplied by your ISP.
NBNCo install, for free, a power supply and a NBN router which your ISP's router plugs into.
The ISP router will have wireless capability and ports to plug in computers, routers, switches and phones.
What you pay will be between you and you ISP. Start researching the plans on offer.

That's correct.
The kit is free and you install it yourself.


With the new Gateway modem you now plug in your computer and also your telephone.
The kit also contains a new T-Voice handset phone but you can also plug in your old phone if you wish.


The existing phones must be unplugged as they wont work once you install the new NBN kit.


By the way, once you have made the change to NBN there is no going back !!!


The blurb states that the old copper wire systems will be phased out within eighteen months once the NBN cabling is installed hence my decision to change over now.
The NBN cabling is not in my area yet but until then my NBN connection will work in the meantime with my existing old copper wire.
They will notify me when they change me over after the complete NBN system is installed.


The blurb also states that this is all free and my existing contract with Telstra, Bigpond will remain unchanged until the contract expires or is renewed.
My telephone number and email address will remain the same.


One thing but, is that the phones wont work if there is a power outage, so you need a mobile to be on the safe side.


It all seems straight forward and simple with no strings attached but I asked the question of others who may have already installed a kit to see if they had any issues during the installation and transition.

I understand the power supplies don't have a battery backup now, is that correct.
Mine does. Also my phone is plugged into the UNI-V port on the NBN router.
My phone still works when there is a power outage.

I know nothing about that Mick.


It just says in the info pack that it wont work in a power outage.


Also it states that other stuff you might have on the old fixed line such as, a medical alert service, a back to base alarm or other equipment eg: fax or EFTPOS, wont work and you need to contact your provider or call Telstra on 1800 996 203.


This Telstra number is the one for all enquiries concerning NBN.

Some of their less popular calling features will not be available with NBN,
ie: Call Control, Call Back, Abbreviated Dialling, Delayed Hotline, Duet, Phone and Fax Multiple Number, Remote Access and Smart Ring.


We will retain Calling Number Display, Call Waiting/ Return/Forward.

We cant be too complacent as when the NBN Co's fibre network is introduced to an area the traditional copper network will be switched off within eighteen months.


I suspect there will be some folk with problems to be solved.

and you will have to keep your eyes open,,
the chances are good the big truck with the large roll of cable wont go down your street--
and maybe not even the cross street--
I reckon I'm at least 500 metres from the nearest possible fibre connection..

so I really dont know how much copper they think they can pull out,,,
