Lan/ether net
I am in the process of hard wiring a computer to the internet. Too many walls in the way for wireless. I have the cable connected. Wireless modem router shows the cable as good with a green light. Computer has done a virtual happy dance and connected to the router OK. Just won`t connect to the internet. Has a exclamation icon in front of the connection icon. Done a computer trouble shoot. Came up with incorrect ip setting. So made sure that was all right. Still no joy.Because I can not connect I can`t even connect to the router/modem. Now there is one possible problem. The wire was all ready installed. It is only a six wire data cable. Good quality wire, tinned wire which is as far as I know is good quality wire. I new from some distant memory that you can actually use six wires as two are spare on rj45 cables. this I have confirmed on the internet. But in some instance you may still need the extra wires for power. This might be the case here. The other issue is speed with only six wires, but not in OZ and a copper net work. So still tying to work out why it wont connect to the internet. Ip setting are good. green light on the modem router. Computer has it ready to connect. Just wont connect.

Hi,
RJ45 actually needs 4 wires (2 pairs) but usually the cable has 8 (4 pairs) , and proper ethernet type cable is twisted in pairs.
I have had cables that give a green light on the device but do not work.
What type of cable are you using? If it isn't proper Cat5e or 6 cable and you are running it any distance it probably won't work as the pairs are twisted to minimise interference.
What IP address is your PC getting if it is 169.x.x.x then you are not connecting properly.
If you let me know your IP I will try and help diagnose it.

The fact the router shows a light for the ethernet connection and the computer has connected leads me to believe the cable is OK. If in doubt get a cheap cable a couple of metres long and connect your PC (you'll have to move it, of course) or a laptop and see what happens.
Have you tried logging on to the router? Typically entering 192.168.0.1 (or whatever your network IPs are and trying the first address xxx.xxx.xxx.1) in a browser window should allow you to log on to the router's management page. There you can check the settings.
If you can open a command line (DOS window) you could also try to ping a workable internet address from your PC to see what happens. While you're at a command prompt, try entering ipconfig /all to see what your network is doing. You want to be able to see an IP address for DHCP and DNS as well as a gateway.
Depending on the operating system you are using, Windows offers a range of network troubleshooting wizards. Looking for those on your PC might help...

Thanks for the reply's. The cable is branded data master, the distance is about fifteen meters, so should not be to much of a issue. Connection at the moment comes up with unidentified net work. So seems to be connected just needs the right settings.

If as already suggest you open a cmd window and type ipconfig /all that will give the information required to help you and look for the section that says Ethernet; and from that section could you tell me what the following are:
IPv4 Address
Default Gateway
DHCP Server
DNS Servers
This will help diagnose the issue so we can try the next step.

Well it looks like it is the data cable. I set up the computer next to the modem router and connected with a standard cable. Computer automatically sorted the settings out through the trouble shoot wizard and I was connected. Moved the computer back to where is was. Connected to the data cable and I get a unidentified net work. So sort of connects but not quite right. So I will now get some proper cable.
