I too am an (albeit partial) Telstra customer for similar reasons. i have a 4G dongle that I connect to my laptop when away from home - it has a simcard. My mobile is also Tesltra (Samsung 5 is complicated enuff for me).

However, my home provider (with wifi) is Westnet/now bought out by iinet, and I'm still very happy with their service after must be nearly 20 years.

So is one of these new devices in the thread and above of any use to me and those like me?

    Cheers Gavin
Does your mobile phone plan have a data allowance in the plan?

Cheers. Yes - $55/month plan for 1GB data and $550 calls allowance, neither of which I have ever come close to using.

Then I have my prepaid 4G dongle on top of that for remote laptop access at $180 pa for I think 20 GB, and again never get close to using it all. I was offered a slightly cheaper monthly prepaid when I was last renewing, and with more data, but that required a direct debit arrangement, which I wont pay fees to Telstra for on principle.

I only upgraded from my simple T3 blue tick last year so I could go back to temp work from retirement to help out with the census and then the recent state election, and I needed a smart phone to supervise. Bloody phone is considerably smarter than me!!!

If your phone can be set up as a mobile hot spot, you can ditch the prepaid 4g dongle.

Westnet to iinet, that was not too bad.

Now TPG has bought out iinet/westnet.

As I have been with westnet for 15 or so years,I'll stay with them until I move(retire ),then I will be looking at someone else for my
connection as I will probably be on going onto nbn by then as I haven't liked tpg's service(from what I've read and heard).

    cheers
