What exactly is happening when you try? Nothing at all? An error message? What happens if you right click and save the attachment somewhere locally and then try and open it through Windows Explorer?

    Try this:

    1. Browse to the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12
    2. Locate the file winword.exe or winword
    3. Right click on the file and then select the Properties option
    4. Click on the Compatibility tab
    5. Uncheck the ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and ‘Run this program as an administrator’ options > Apply > OK

Agree. It can open a large range of file types and made it possible for us to recover aged father in laws Claris Works documents.

Libre Office is great (and free!).
I have surprised and impressed a few Windows users by opening a newish Word document in Libre Office that wouldn't open in a slighter older version of Word.
