I dont think they've done their Zen2 customers any favours,, but at least the socket stays the same( take note Intel...)

I jumped from an 1800x to a 3950x without anything other than a BIOS update. My x370 hardware won't support Zen3.

In fact, I can't quite figure out what impact it will have on any existing Zen2 owners. It might delay expenditure on new hardware, and it'll likely cause a drop in Zen2 prices, which would be a bonus for new buyers.

Actually, I can't see a down-side for any customer. Am I missing something?

AMD have delivered (if not over-delivered) on every promise with the Zen core, probably after being burned on Bulldozer (which was what I upgraded from to Ryzen). If they keep it up Zen3 should be a blinder.

I was pretty happy with the 1800x, but since the 3950x was just a drop-in replacement it was easier to justify.

My desktop is a 2011 i7-2600 but as most of the grunt is done on VMs on the server and it does what I need I can't really justify upgrading it.

I bought my first one in March 2017.

i bought the 3950x in December last year. I can’t see Zen3 being released until later in the year even if announced in October. They are roughly keeping up their yearly cadence.
