Aren't 'Sungrow' a solar power mob? It may have something to do with their systems' ops.
Can anyone identify this, please?

I thought it was a USB, but it doesn't fit and the contacts do not extend to the end.

Sungrow do have a small range of dongle, but they don't look like that. Looking at the pic I suspect that the box and the item are unrelated.

The box certainly appears to be custom made for the item.

So is it simply a waterproof USB stick? I was very reluctant to put excessive pressure on it, to force it into the slot on the laptop. Is it a unique connection?

The contacts need to face up towards the centre of the usb slot, it is missing a top plate so you may have tried to put it in with contacts facing downwards.
Think of it like an anderson plug, once flipped the faces are in the centre of the assembly contacting each other.
All lappys and boxes I have seen have the usb receptacles with contacts facing down so insert gently with contacts facing up for maximum coupling.
