    Computer Help needed!!!

    Hi all,
I posted this in the communications forum but the replies were a bit sparse, that's why I am requesting help from you here again...

Well, a couple of weeks ago or so my harddisc went PANG, without much prior notice. In other words, a "physical failure", so I have to find some specialist to retrieve the data.
I bought a new disc and installed it as well as an operative system, W 2000 in this case (having been using W 98 prior to the trouble). Now everything is installed and working nicely, except for some quirks:

    • The EPC won't work! I tried to stop Orbix daemon as stated in the description but when trying to open the other Orbix file I always receive an error message and cannot proceed. I tried this several times but to no avail. Any suggestions from the experts?
    • I cannot access the internet! Although the line is open and connection established neither can my browser or e-mail program get out. It feels like a firewall or something is blocking all traffic. As I am not aware of any firewall installed I wonder if there might be another explanation.

Please help me as right now I am stuck and can only use my computer access at work but will be going on holiday soon.
    Cheers and thanks in advance!!!
    Johannes

I read it before, and it's still Greek to me, Jojo.

Does windows 2000 have a firewall built in like Xp does? If so, perhaps try disabling it

Apart from that, have you considered taking it to a computer repairer?

    G'day Jojo

I can't get the Land Rover Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) to work with Windows XP either inspite of following the instructions to the letter...the Orbix daemon is precisely that .

I will watch this thread with interest.

As for the Internet connection....that is a bummer...I thought that W2000 was heavy duty...what browser and email software are you using?

    G'day!
And thanks for your empathy! I use Firefox as browser and Thunderbird as mail program but I also have tried the MS crap IE and Outlook, alas to no avail .
And if W2000 has an inbuilt firewall, how do I disable it???? If not, what can be the cause of the fault????

I have considered expert help but want to give it a shot myself (I wouldn't drive my Landrover to the garage either in first place ), but of course, if I don't succeed I will have to resort to this option.

Since I don't even know whether W2000 HAS a firewall...

In XP you open the Control panel and then the Security Centre and check to see what's happening with the firewall.

    Hi Jojo,

Just a few questions to see if I can help.

    - How do you connect to the internet? - is it through a dialup type modem or ADSL or some other type?

Win2000 does NOT have a built in firewall. - but if you have any one of the dozens on internet security products sold - it is still possible for that to be blocking the browser and the email client.

When you think the machine is on the internet:

Click start>run and type cmd> then press enter.

A black command line box will open.

At the command prompt type ipconfig

Tell us what that address is - it will help determine whether or not you are actually getting out of the machine to your isp. ( an IP starting with 169 is generated by your own machine - so it is not getting out)

If you are... then it sounds like specific ISP configuration needs if it is not a firewall. ( Their helpdesk should be able to assist you)

I'm pretty sure Inc. knows the tricks to getting EPC working - I have it running on XP fine - but I set it up about 2 years ago so can't remeber the tricks

Let us know how that goes and we'll see if we can help more.

i have now heard of three systems out of a hundred or so that wont run it...

as mentioned elsewhere, run the install program in win98 compatibility mode, this fixes 99% of them, but it appears there are some that are totally lost causes for some reason.

when i get some time i will try a few things out on my new laptop as it appears to have the problem.

service pack 2 seems to have had some sort of affect on it also from what i have seen.

i have had so little time to myself lately i simply havent been able to look into some of these things...

    Thanks for all your advice!
I have the computer at home, my only access to the internet is at my workplace (where I am now) and that's why I cannot try your advice at the instant. I will have to wait until tomorrow as I will be stuck here at work for quite a while. Bugger...

I have a dial-up-connection via modem, and -so far- haven't actively installed a firewall, although an antivirus and service program is installed (FixIt).

I will definitely give you all information concerning the outcome and will certainly require more help (and moralic support).
    Cheers

    Hi Jojo

Your Fitit utilities program, while it contains an anti-virus program does not contain a firewall.
However it does scan your email and internet use.
Maybe try disabling the program from automatically starting up with your computer?
Maybe you can take it out of the STARTUP group in your start menu.

re: EPC i haven't used this program but I have used similar ones.
One was PDF based > So maybe you need Adobe Acrobat installed?
The other was Java based > So maybe you need Sun Java installed?
Both programs are free and available from the internet or most PC magazine discs.

About your modem: check in the device manager that it is installed correctly. If it is not you will see a red cross or exclamation mark on the modem in the device manager list.

Next to check is working correctly:
When you dial out to the net can you hear a dial-tone?
    if not
Go to Windows Control Panel > Phone & Modem Options. Now check the Modems or advanced tab, (from memory only can't remember) there's a button that tests the connection to the modem.
It says something like communicating with modem, please wiat then fills some fields in with info about your modem.
(Hope someone who has W2k can help you find it, if you can't from my gibberish).
If you can hear a dial-out or the communication thing works OK then it's probably your dial-up settings are incorrect, may double check your password & username and dial-up number with your ISP help line.

IF you get connected and still don't get internet or email, then well..........
Try the stuff above first and let us know.
There's only so much I can type in one go without going in to cramps

Like Bytemrk says do "cmd" and type ipconfig /all (it looks like c:\>ipconfig /all) and you should get full info about network configurstion.

    For example:

    Code:

    Windows IP Configuration

            Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Ruslan
            Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
            Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
            IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
            WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

            Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
            Description . . . . . . . . . . . : 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX)
            Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-XX-XX-XX
            Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
            Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
            IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101
            Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
            Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
            DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
            DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
            Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Friday, 20 October 2006 1:14:42 PM
            Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Sunday, 22 October 2006 1:14:42 PM
Instead of the Ethernet adapter you wiil see Dialup or something like that. In you case DNS is important, no DNS no internet and e-mail. Of course, all this steps are relevant if modem is OK.

Don't remember about W2K, XP has option to run programs in compatibility mode for all previous versions of the MSWindows. Right click on .exe file -> Properties, Compatibility tab and tick.

    Cheers,
    Ruslan
