    Question G4 iBook internet woes!

    Hi People,
Can anyone shed some light on this?
I have a 14 inch iBook (1 Gig RAM) and browse via Optusnet with D-Link DSL & wireless router.
It keeps dropping the connection and saying 'unable to connect' or something like that BUT the Airport icon always shows 75-100% signal strength.
Every time this happens, I have to manually re establish a connection and the Mac gives it a new name, like: 'Tuesday 20 Feb 18.06 PM'.
It's behaved for the last 12 months but this is driving me mad! I don't understand how it can be connected and yet be unable to connect

    Thanks!

Do you have a cordless phone? Cordless phones that transmit/receive 2.4ghz range interfere with wireless networking in same 2.4ghz range.

If this is the case you need to set both wireless systems to broadcast on different channels (there about a dozen) and leave a couple of channels between them.

Also move the phone base station away from the wireless access point.

If it is not a wireless problem it could be that your router is set to not automatically reconnect if the internet connection is dropped. To fix that you need to log into your D-link router through a web page - type in the ip address into the browser address bar. It will be something like 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1. The option to reconnect on lost internet connection should be either a radio button that gives you the option to always reconnect, or a field to enter a length of time to reconnect on dropout - set to zero.

First thing I would do would be plug it into the model with a utp cable and trial for a while. See if it's the wireless side of things or the connection.

Thanks guys, I'll try all your suggestions!
My money's on the cordless phone as I recently moved the modem and it's sitting next to the phone base station..

If it does work out to be your phone and switching channels doesn't help... maybe look at upgrading to a new 5.8ghz phone to get on a completely new signal... we had that same problem in my office but now all sorted with new phones

Well..It's working again but I'm not sure why!
I connected directly via modem; no worries.
Then hooked up the router and started the 'new connection' process again but this time chose 'Ethernet' instead of 'Airport' (don't ask why) and she's off and flying! I thought ethernet was a cable.. Can you buy a Mac for dummies book?

So it sounds like a wireless problem not a modem/internet connection problem.

    Cheers
