Went the Acer way myself. Acer Aspire 3000, $998, AMD 2,800 Sempron, 40 Gb disk, 512 Mb memory. Now a dual booter, with Mandriva Linux on the second 20 gb partition. Runs like a Landy, no problems at all. Well, alright, the MS Update system knocks the Windows install around, but no probs with the machine, she's a wee ripper.
Shorty.
Hey, you haven't got a spare power supply for one of them in your back pocket have you NM?![]()

I thought about the Asus.
Need/prefer tablet facility but in a normal laptop size.
The Dell cost $7500 five years ago, but it's run it's course now!
Geez, mate just go the Mac if ya got money to throw at it.
You could probably load Vista up onto it too. If not run xp emu or whatever it's called.
Cheers

Woah Nellie. I could have got 7 Acers for that price. Dayum, I am so glad I have an "in" when it comes to IT purchases.
Seriously Jamo, check out the special offers from the chains like Harvey Norman, etc. Got my Acer as a special about a year ago from Retravision. I almost favour it over the big 64 bit Athlon, that is my main workstation on my network. Is a lot easier to carry around too.![]()
Abaddonxi, don't know if the problem has been solved yet or not, but, there were some nasty things happened to the new EFI Mactels, when people tried to install XP to them. Seems XP trashed the whole machine to a useless lump of non-functional junk. The clever gurii might have found a work-around by now.
Shorty.

Thanks everyone.
Nothing on Apples' website indicates they produce a tablet, well nothing I could find anyway. And they're heavy.
Last time I needed a powerful desktop replacement that I could move around as well. The Dell is still powerful when compared to many laptops, but has started to show the signs of overuse (ie it doesn't work as well anymore) and weighs in a 4.5kg (not good for travel).
I need a reasonably good one with tablet facility so I can utilise sketching and notetaking software in the field.
