Hmm, I've had Macs and I've had PCs. If I had any money and wanted a new computer I might buy a mac laptop and use it as a PC.

    Macs are a dictatorship.

    PCs are a democracy.

btw, in sheer numbers I think I own more Macs than PCs this week after divesting myself of twenty four PCs last week.

    Cheers

Huh? PC's running windows are the biggest technology dictatorship ever! PC's running linux are a democracy. I would also say that the OS X with it's UNIX roots is a far more open environment than MS ever will be.

I apologise if I'm starting to blither but I'm waiting for a SAN administrator to get her storage up so I can start my 4 terrabytes worth of Oracle databases and go to bed

You don't have to run MS software on a PC = choice
Up until Macs went to Intel processors you had to run Mac OS. When Mac changes their OS or their hardware platform you have to go out and buy everything from scratch. How many times has Apple done this?

If you want to buy hardware you have to buy Mac hardware or a small selection of third party hardware all at inflated prices. If anything goes wrong with your mac you get that smug little bomb and a number that should mean something, but when you go looking for it you can't find a thing and even if you can you're locked out of fixing the damn thing without going to a specialist approved repairer who'll charge you an arm and a leg.

And how much to Apple charge you for a your version of Linux?

Somehow it doesn't sit right with me that they take open source software and charge you for it. Oh, and how many times has everyone paid for OSX?

Apple makes great quality hardware, and the desktop file system is miles ahead of PCs. The rest of it is pirates in suits with a great marketing team.

Don't start me on the smug Mac ads.

    Cheers

Funny how the world of home (and most business) computers was created by three blokes working together, before they went their separate ways. Steve Jobs, Apple; Bill Gates, Microsoft; and Steve Wosniak, whats he up to these days?

The guy who apparently created 'word' (for Microsoft) is currently a space tourist, $25 mill for 12 days in space, bargain!

    Me... I love both.

As a day job, I make lots of money by making Windows work properly... but OS of choice for me at home is OS X.

Infact, these days, the cheapest way to get a Dual Core Intel laptop for XP or Vista is to buy a Mac... You'd also get a decen OS thrown in.

What? You mean like the change from DOS to Windows or WFW to Win95 or NT4 to XP... Then there's not forgetting the change from ISA, EISA, PCI, etc...

At least with a Mac, they're usually still usable when over 3yrs old.

If you want to buy hardware you have to buy Mac hardware or a small selection of third party hardware all at inflated prices.
Depends what you want... You still pay through the nose for high performance graphics cards, HDD, etc... for PCs.

If anything goes wrong with your mac you get that smug little bomb and a number that should mean something, but when you go looking for it you can't find a thing and even if you can you're locked out of fixing the damn thing without going to a specialist approved repairer who'll charge you an arm and a leg.
Jeez... You haven't used a Mac for a while.

And how much to Apple charge you for a your version of Linux?
Errr... Nothing actually. It came with the 'pooter. Much like there are OEM version of Windows. Oh... and it's BSD (Darwin Project).

Somehow it doesn't sit right with me that they take open source software and charge you for it. Oh, and how many times has everyone paid for OSX?
Apple are not charging you for the open source software... What Apple are charging you for is the 'Finder' / User interface. It's like installing Linux and then buying yourself a decent filemanager... As the saying goes, "You get what you pay for".

This OSX Mac just hums along running OSX asa primary and I still occasionally use OS9 for a few apps. which is also onboard, never a prob.

The Windows XP laptop has the other users in this house often cussin' 'n' swearin'...... and now they want to dump it and get a Mac laptop.

    Hmmmm
